Over the course of the semester I had the opportunity to tutor two English Language Learners at their high school. I was able to watch the girls grow and develop in their English abilities. The experiences that I had with them is able to connect to multiple Performance Criterion. For ED - 271, I completed a
write up on my observations and experiences.
Performance Criterion 1.1: designs developmentally appropriate learning experiences
I was able to create challenging learning experiences for both girls in relation to the assignments that we worked on during our tutoring sessions. One instance of this is during a time with Donna while working on a project that required us to research the way in which the United States is handling issues with ISIS. I challenged Donna to go through the article and determine the three most important points from the article that she would then discuss within her essay. She struggled with the activity, and often looked to me for help, but by the end of the tutoring session she understood the concept and was able to determine significant points within articles.
Performance Criterion 2.1: designs inclusive learning experiences
I helped both girls to a standard that they were more than capable of reaching. I encouraged them to always try their best and work hard to reach their goals. I worked with both Carol and Donna on their spoken and written English skills. One thing we worked on was phonetics so they would have an easier time determining words on their own. For Carol, occasionally we encouraged her to translate sentences into French if she was struggling to understand a concept even after it was explained.
